The lights flickered in the lab as Jack woke up. Just was still settling and there was smoke in the air as he took in his surroundings. Everything was in ruin.
Over a decade a worth of work was scattered around the lab, equipment and paperwork smashed and tore apart, lay in pieces as far as he could see.
Attempting to get up he realized he was pinned down, something was crushing his leg and he hadn't felt it until now. 'That's not good' he thought to himself. He tried to pull on his leg but was racked with pain running up his spine from the crushed limb. "Fuck!" He cried out.
Just then he heard a groan from across the room. "Rory? Ray? You guys alright?" Jack called out, remembering the others that were in the lab before everything became a giant mess.
"I'm alright, old man." A young man's voice called from the suction of the groan.
"Ray! The fuck happened?" Jack asked as he was shook with pain again. "Shit, forget that. I'm pinned kid, I'm gonna need some help"
"Is saving your ass going to be a new routine around here, or am I just unlucky?" Ray chided as he came around a server cabinet that was knocked over. "Shit, you look like... Well, shit." He said as he knelt next to Jack.
"I feel like it, now help me out of here, lift that cabinet off my leg." Jack nodded towards the file cabinet crushing his leg. "Slowly, it fucking hurts and too fast might cause more damage"
"Looks kinda heavy, let me test it first" Ray slid a hand under the corner and tried to lift the cabinet, it hardly budged. Jack howled in pain as he set it back down. "Let me see if I can find something to help." He said before he darted back into the smoke.
"Hurry up! There's a fire or something if there's this much smoke" Jack called after him. "See if you can find Rory"
"No shit." Ray muttered as he shoved aside server cabinets and remnants of the massive quantum computer that used to take up most of the lab. "How the hell did all this happen?" He asked himself as he rounded a corner. Slumped against the wall was a man in a white lab coat, Ray recognized him instantly as Rory, not because of what he was wearing, but due to his resemblance to Jack. Being a clone of sorts, Rory had the same punchable face as Jack, only younger, yet different somehow.
"You alive?" Ray asked, slapping Rory a couple times in the cheek. Looking up to the kid, Rory shook his head and sighed. "It's one thing to save Jack, but to come to my aid? Things just be pretty bad. Holy crap, what the hell happened here?" He said fully taking in the room around him.
"We can figure that out later. You good? Jack is pinned." Ray said extending a hand out to Rory.
"Yeah, I'm good." Rory said taking Ray's hand. "Let's save Jack... Again."
After twenty minutes and lots of effort, they managed to free Jack, and get him mobile. He wasn't as injured as he lead on, earning him some side eye from his companions, but they didn't say anything. With a bit of team effort, the three managed to move aside enough debris to reach the tunnel to the surface, and climbed out, flopping into the ground gasping for the fresh mid morning air.
"Anyone know what the fuck happened in my lab?" Jack asked after a few minutes, staring at the sky as he leveled his breathing.
"Well, nothing good I imagine." smirked Ray.
"I think... I think he's loose. " Rory said softly.
"Great... Just great... Did anyone bother to check the status of the pods?" Jack asked sitting up quickly.
"Yeah, pod room is fine. Seems like the damage was all in Lab A. " Ray said, trying to calm Jack down.
"We need to go back down" Jack says rising to his feet, his ankle causing him to limp and wince as he walked back towards the hatch.
"We need to find Mac" Rory said standing up to follow Jack.
"We need to get the fire out before Lab A isn't the only thing on fire down there" Ray reminded them.
"Well fuck" Jack and Rory said in unison, then turned to stare at one another.
"This is getting old" the two said at once.
Ray laughed.
